A Matter of Perspective

I took a few drawing classes in college. We mainly worked with one still life scene that was set up in the center of a circle of drawing tables. Each student sat in the same seat for several classes to complete their drawing. Once we were finished, we would all pin up our pieces to a huge bulletin board to take a look at our creations.

I was greatly impacted by how absolutely different each one of the drawings was. Of course, there were many stylistic and skill-based differences between artists, which I anticpiated. But it was astounding to me that even though we were all drawing the same set of objects, our physical perspectives were totally unique, even if people were seated close to one another. In fact, an artist across from me drew a stack of old books that was completely hidden from my vantage point. I didn't even know they existed!

Can you see the implications of this realization in every day life?

Can we see everything that is going on from our limited personal perspective?

Can we ever have any idea what another person is perceiving from their unique perspective?

Is anyone ever right or wrong? Or is it all simply a matter of perspective...?

Does it feel a bit easier to give people (including yourself) some grace and compassion if we can remember that they can only experience life from THEIR perspective?
