If You Give A Mind A Cookie

(From a Former Binge Eater's Perspective)

If you give a mind a cookie, it’s going to think about eating another.

When it thinks about eating another, it will question whether you really need another. It will determine that you don’t need another, but cookies are so tasty, and you’ve had a hard day and you need some comfort.

When the mind gets another cookie, it will get uneasy. And when it gets uneasy, it feels uncomfortable. And when it feels uncomfortable, it believes it is unsafe. And when it believes it’s unsafe, it will start looking for protection in solutions.

“Next time, I won’t eat two cookies. I’ll just have one. In fact, I don’t need any cookies. I’m not going to eat them anymore. Problem solved.”

When a mind believes it has solved a problem, it feels better (for a short while) and minds its own business.

But when next time comes, a mind still wants a cookie. It’s going to think about eating that cookie. And another. And another. But when it knows it doesn’t eat them anymore, a mind will get uneasy. And when it gets uneasy, it feels uncomfortable. And when it feels uncomfortable, it believes it is unsafe. And when it believes it is unsafe, it will start looking for protection in solutions.

“I’ll have cookies this one time. I’d better eat all the cookies now, though, because this is the last time. Problem solved.”

When a mind believes it has solved a problem, it feels better (for a few moments) and minds its own business.

But, then its business becomes solving the problem of your disordered relationship with food. And this is a big problem it cannot immediately solve, and a mind gets very uneasy. And when it gets very uneasy, it feels very uncomfortable. And when it feels very uncomfortable, it believes it is very unsafe. And when it believes it is very unsafe, and there are no immediate solutions, it will feel fearful, hopeless, and trapped.

And in this place, a mind begs for a cookie. A mind begs for all the cookies. All the cookies will make those feelings go away, even if it’s just for a moment. Cookies are better than feelings.

If you give a mind those cookies, it’s going to think you are a failure. It’s going to make those cookies mean something about you. It is going to judge you harshly. It is going to have a lot to say, and it will say it over and over again to make sure you’re paying attention...

But you are not a mind.

You are not required to believe anything about cookies, disordered relationships, failure, or what is needed for protection or comfort. You are never required to believe anything.

You can feel.

You can have an uneasy mind. It is safe.

You can feel discomfort. It is safe.

You can feel fearful, hopeless, and trapped. It is all safe.

Invite those feelings into you, as you; the mind is not necessary. Welcome those feelings; they're already here. Allow them space to move as they will. They are energy swirling. Let them be as they are. Let them show you what they are. Just watch. Just be.

You do not need cookies or no cookies.

You are This. Here. Now.

You are aliveness itself. Complete now. Perfect now.

Just as you are.
