What if gratitude isn't something we have to create, but something we can tune into?
I've been exploring an insight lately that's changing how I experience emotions. It has to do with frequency, vibration, and the possibility that the things we call feelings already exist as energetic states we can tune into.
Take gratitude, for example.
We tend to think of gratitude as something that arises in response to something. We're grateful for our family, our health, a beautiful sunset, a kindness someone extended to us. We bring these things to mind, and invite ourselves to feel grateful. There's nothing wrong with that. But what if gratitude itself is something much bigger than the things we attach to it?
What if gratitude is its own frequency? A hum that already exists, independent of any particular person, experience, or circumstance...?
What if we don't have to create gratitude at all? What if we can simply tune into it?
I've been wondering whether this is true of other feeling states, too. Perhaps these frequencies are already present, and depending on what's happening in our physical, psychological, and energetic bodies, we're more or less attuned to them. Much of this may be happening outside our conscious awareness.
Exploring this is really shifting things for me. It takes the pressure off trying to manufacture a particular feeling. We can certainly use memories, experiences, and things we're thankful for to help direct our attention. But perhaps those things aren't the source of gratitude; they're simply a way of finding the frequency.
And here's another possibility:
What if we can experience more than one frequency at a time?
We tend to think of feelings as competing states. But perhaps our experience of life isn't a one-note vibration. Perhaps it's a whole song, even a symphony of frequencies. We can be sad and grateful, uncertain and curious, heartbroken and deeply connected to life. One experience doesn't have to cancel out another.
I'm not sharing this as something I've figured out or learned from someone else. It's an understanding that's emerging through meditation, shamanic journeying, self-inquiry, and communication with spirit guides. I'm simply following what I'm being shown.
And I find it both fascinating and liberating.
Perhaps we can stop trying so hard to make ourselves feel the things we think we should feel. Perhaps we can become more available to what's already here.
What if gratitude has been humming along all this time, and all we have to do is tune in?
